This volume collects the papers presented at the EuropeanConference on Spatial Information Theory (COSIT '93) held onthe island of Elba, Italy, inSeptember 1993. Spatialinformation theory includes disciplinary topics andinterdisciplinary issues dealing with the conceptualizationand formalization of large-scale (geographic) space. Itcontributes towards a consistent theoretical basis forGeographic Information Systems (GIS).Geographic information systems are widely used inadministration, planning, and science in many differentcountries, and for a wide variety ofapplications. Researchresults which relevant for GIS are distributed between manydisciplines and contacts between researchers have beenlimited. At the same time, the development of GIS has beenhinderedby the lack of a sound theoretical base. Thisconference was intended to help remedies these problems.
