Yoko Tawada wurde 1960 in Tokyo geboren und lebt seit 1982 in Deutschland. Studium in Tokyo, Hamburg und Zürich; Promotion bei Sigrid Weigel. Reisen auf vier Kontinenten. Tawadas zweisprachiges Werk umfasst Lyrik und Prosa, Theater-, Hörspiel- und Operntexte; es wurde in Japan wie in Deutschland vielfach ausgezeichnet (u.a. Gunzô-Literaturpreis, 1991; Akutagawa-Preis, 1993; Chamisso-Preis, 1996; Goethe-Medaille, 2005). Zahlreiche Übersetzungen in weitere Sprachen. 2013 wurde Yoko Tawada mit dem "Erlanger Literaturpreis für Poesie als Übersetzung" ausgezeichnet und 2016 mit dem Kleist-Preis.
