The perfect mark, in fact, for Simpsons special brand of entrepreneurism, until Harper catches Simpson rifling his belongings and he reveals himself to be a big fish from a big pond, blackmailing the thieving taxi driver into driving a supicious car across the Turkish border. When Simpson is caught, he is forced to spy on Harper and his gang of international jewel thieves.

Eric Ambler, geboren 1909 als Sohn eines Schauspieler- und Entertainerpaars in London, studierte Maschinenbau und arbeitete zunächst als Werbetexter. In den dreißiger Jahren schrieb er seine ersten Agentenromane. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg war er Artillerist, dann Produktionsleiter von Lehrfilmen in der britischen Armee; nach 1946 arbeitete er u.a. als Drehbuchautor und Produzent und gewann für drei seiner Bücher den Edgar-Allan-Poe-Preis. Er starb 1998 in London.
