The book presents a detailed mathematical introduction to the main classes of Markov processes together with their applications in various fields. It has been developed from a number of successful courses taught by the author to a wide-ranging student audience, including in Mathematicians, Engineers and Biologists.
The core of the book presents the fundamental processes that make up this growing area of simulation and subsequent prediction. This includes the Monte Carlo method, discrete time Markov chains with values in a countable state space, the Poisson process, and continuous time Markov processes with values in a countable state space.
Built around this core are several applications of these processes. This includes the examination of both simulated annealing and the MCMC algorithms: the hidden Markov models for the annotation of the genome and sequence alignment: presentation of models and algorithms for phylogenic reconstruction: control and filtering, including the Kalman filter (to track a time-varying signal in the presence of noise): queues and networks: financial mathematics, including Ito calculus.
These applications, from a variety of areas, allow the reader to see the impact of the processes in use. To cement this understanding, numerous exercises are also presented and the reader is provided with the solutions either in the text or on the accompanying website.
