Cyberwood used to be their shelter. Now, it's turning against them.
When cybernetically enhanced plants began evolving beyond regular technology, the world relegated all cyber-plants to a 50-mile-diameter biome in the Saharan Annex. There, under the guidance of the High Technomantress, the forest provides its six surrounding clearing villages with food, water, climate, communication, and even inter-village teleportation so citizens don't have to go through the woods. Fay Butler is the granddaughter of the High Technomantress, supposedly in line for the esteemed position, but her Gramma chose Lily Vathrornstoe as an apprentice instead of her.
Then, on Fay's last day of school, the High Technomatress falls suddenly ill; she is separated from her Staff of Office, and after she is whisked to another village for treatment, Cyberwood shuts down. Food and water stop, communication, and teleportation are offline and worse things may be happening in the heart of the forest.
If the desert-bound biome is to survive, Fay must team up with her archrival, Lily, to cross through the forest and bring the Staff to her Gramma, if she even lives. It's anyone's guess what-or who-could stand in their way…
Less than five years after graduating summa cum laude with his bachelor's degree in English, Ben became the editor of the awarded over-150-year-old newspaper, The Sauk Centre Herald (ask him why his holding that job means he's a better writer than Sinclair Lewis). He lives in Sauk Centre, MN, with his wife and son, and aside from being a writer and editor, he's also a second-degree Taekwondo black belt, a Lego enthusiast, a casual PC gamer, a hat collector, a stubborn jogger, and, as an introvert, someone who oscillates between talking too much and not at all.
Ben's short fiction has appeared in publications including Daily Science Fiction, Aphelion, Perihelion, Edify Fiction, Sonder Midwest, and the Planet Raconteur podcast.
