The novel chronicles the rise of Xingsheng Qianzhuang in Xi'an from 1902 to 1906 under the coordinated leadership the the third-generation head Chang Fangzheng and his counsellor Wang Xuanli, and through the management of Chang Yixun and Luo Yumei, Chang Fangzheng's son and daughter-in-law as well as the shopkeeper of the Lanzhou branch, Yang Maotang, punctuated with the struggles between the qianzhuang's personnel charged with the task of expanding the business in Zigong, Lanzhou and Shaanxi with outlaws of underground qianzhuang. The novels travels between time and spaces and paint a historical panorama of the enterprising Shaanxi businessmen a century ago with arresting plot twists and details.The story takes place when the Qing court ordered a series of reforms aimed at making sweeping social and institutional changes after the Boxer Rebellion and the exile of Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guangxu. When the government becomes reform-minded, the Xingsheng qianzhuang actively follows and develops itself into a thriving business, hence a series of vivid and inspiring stories of assiduity despite hardships.Although the story spans only 5 years, readers can glimpse and be impressed by the decade-long management of the qianzhuang entrepreneurs, and their enterprising spirit, resilience to external forces and commitment against all odds.
