But the same cannot be said for other important literary figures through the ages. Men and women like Robert Burton, Nicholas Hardinge, Erasmus Darwin, Anna Seward, William Bagshaw Stevens, Tom Moore, Lord Byron, Louisa Stuart Costello. And quite possibly even Walter Scott, friend and champion of Costello, and Charles Dickens whose patron was the daughter of its owner Sir Francis Burdett, one of the giants of Regency politics. It was the site of one of the few observations of a Transit of Venus in 1661 and the setting for at least one of the paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby.
