One of today’s most recognizable characters, Tarzan got his start in the pages of a fifteen-cent pulp magazine. The October 1912 issue of All-Story magazine printed “Tarzan of the Apes – A Romance of the Jungle” in its entirety – an unprecedented move since stories were normally serialized – and readers couldn’t get enough of the story about an orphan boy raised by apes in Africa.
Autoren-Porträt von Edgar Rice Burroughs
Edgar Rice Burroughs was born to a major in the Civil War, and when an influenza epidemic ravished Chicago his parents sent him to live with his older brothers on a cattle ranch in Idaho. He loved it out West and, after attending Michigan Military Academy, joined the Seventh United States Calvary in Arizona. It was at a job as a pencil-sharpener wholesaler that came across the pulp magazines that forever changed his destiny. According to legend, Burroughs said, “If people were paid for writing rot such as I read in some of those magazines … I could write stories just as rotten.” He began his career as a writer, churning out such classics as The Land That Time Forgot, The Girl From Hollywood, The Cave Girl, Pirates of Venus, and of course Tarzan of the Apes.
