Whether it will be swept out to sea by incoming waves or eaten by a ravenous sea gull, an acorn lies helpless on the sandy shoreline. Gathering supplies from among sea shells and driftwood, a Kiawah Indian woman notices the acorn, places it in her pocket, and plants it in her garden farther inland. The life cycle of the acorn begins as it is placed into the earth and is followed throughout the story as children are protected by its branches and animals feed from its fruits. This is a touching story of one acorn’s journey to becoming one of the oldest oak trees in North America and its fight for survival in 2010.
