Produktinformationen zu „Playing on the Roof (ePub)“
One day my grandfather came to me and said, Its time you went to a baseball game. Get your jacket. The year was 1950; I was nine years old. . . . After purchasing tickets, we walked into the darkened building and up a long, shadowed winding ramp. In the distance, at the end of the ramp, was a rectangle of daylight. . . . When I stepped into the light, [w]hat I saw changed my life forever. The field was gigantic, larger than anything I had seen before. And the colorbefore that moment, I did not know what GREEN meant. . . . It was pure magic. I was stunned. I was speechless. I was in love. Thus begins Playing on the Roof, a collection of funny and tender stories about Jerry Waxmans childhood in Brooklyn and Long Island, his passion for baseball and the Giants, his interest in girls, his brushes with death and with the law, and his love affair with solar eclipses. Also included are his two forays into science fiction. Although most of these pieces were written during a long and difficult illness, all convey the wonder and joy Jerry found in living.
Autoren-Porträt von Jerry Waxman
Born in Brooklyn, home of the Dodgers, in 1941, Jerry Waxman grew up a lifelong Giants fan. He said it explained a lot. Along with his love for baseball, his fascination with the heavens began in early childhood. After graduate school in physics and astronomy at UCLA, and after a brief stint at Santa Monica Community College, Jerry, in 1976, began a long teaching career at Santa Rosa Junior College. Under his leadership, the astronomy program at SRJC flourished, becoming the largest community college astronomy program in the state. A gifted teacher, Jerry was known for his inspiring lectures, his voice (he never used a mike) carrying well outside the lecture hall. In the 1990s, Jerry shifted his focus from the heavens to the Earth. He completed a doctorate in Environmental Studies at Union College, began to teach environmental science, and founded SRJC’s Institute for Environmental Education.
Jerry was an avid skier, a licensed pilot, a scuba diver, an oil painter, and a lover of chocolate. He ran four marathons, and, until a few weeks before he died of Multiple Systems Atrophy on October 13, 2009, Jerry could often be seen at AT&T Park with his son, Keith, cheering on the Giants.
