As a "e;sent-down youth"e; he used to read diligently and built three tile-roofed houses which were called "e;Study of Three Kinds of Spare Time"e; to express his resolve. It seems the pieces were written in his spare time. I can imagine how the author was immersed in writing the pieces in winter, on rainy and snowy nights.
