He sought to ease tension between the North and the South on the issue of slavery through popular sovereignty, and lost the presidency to Lincoln. He died of typhoid while working to gain support for the Union.

Henry Parker Willis (1874 – 1937) had a large part in the writing of the Federal Reserve Act. One of the first people to earn a doctorate from the University of Chicago, he was recruited as an economics and political-science professor at the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics by President Wilson. Beginning in 1903 he went to the Philippines to conduct research for a book.
