As a contribution to the ongoing discussion on world food security the International Society for Sustainable Development and Agriculture (ISSDA) organized in Goettingen, Germany from 1 to 3 December 2011 an International Seminar on Sustainable Land Use and the Food Chain: From the Producer to the Consumer. This book is based on the research findings presented at the seminar. It was attended by scientists from 16 countries. Their contributions cover a wide range of subjects such as technologies for sustainable wheat production in India, genetic options for wheat production and phosphorus uptake of wheat as well as more general topics such as organic farming in Benin, life cycle assessment of pork production in South Africa, safe drinking water for the poor, food quality control in Germany, gender equality in Timor-Leste, rice export from Pakistan, improved minerals bioavailability through phytate degradation, vegetable supply chain in Indonesia and contributions of plant and animal breeders for sustainable agriculture. One paper reviews the food security situation in Germany in intervals of 30 years from 1864 to 2014 with a perspective to 2044 and 2074. The geographical areas covered by the papers extend from Benin, Germany, India, Indonesia, Timor-Leste and Pakistan to South Africa.
