In November 2016 the University of Brighton hosted a one day conference entitled "The Future of Human Rights in the UK". Legal academics and practitioners from across the UK and Ireland attended to discuss the various topical issues that arise under the title of the conference. Papers were presented on terrorism and counter-terrorism, the role of the European Court of Human Rights, surrogacy and parental rights, union rights, social and economic rights and Brexit; to name but a few. This edited collection comprises a selection of the papers presented. It is a thought-provoking collection designed to make the reader ask themselves: what does the future of human rights in the UK look like?
Autoren-Porträt
Claire-Michelle Smyth holds an LLB in Irish Law, an LLM in International Human Rights Law and a PhD from Queens University Belfast, UK. She has taught widely in the areas of international law, human rights and private law, and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Brighton, UK. She researches widely in the area of human rights, particularly social and economic rights, and discusses her research regularly at national and international conferences. She is active in publishing her research, most recently Social and Economic Rights in Ireland (2017) and "Social and Economic Rights in International Law: The Struggle for Equivalent Protection" in The Routledge History of Human Rights (edited by Lora Windenthal and Jean Quateart).Richard Lang is a qualified barrister and solicitor, and acquired his LLM in European Law from University College London, UK. He practised European law for several years in Brussels before returning to the UK to study for his PhD at Kings College London. Until 2015, he was Principal Lecturer and LLB Undergraduate Portfolio Leader at the University of Bedfordshire, UK, and he is currently Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Brighton, UK. He has written on equality, the right to property and victims' rights, and in 2013–14 acted as External Expert for the European Parliament's Petitions Committee on fundamental rights. He is the author of Complex Equality and the Court of Justice of the European Union: A Counterfactual Analysis, as well as Series Editor for Legal Perspectives on Brexit.
