The International Community should be advised that the military dictatorship of Myanmar is in dispute.
Poverty, forced displacement, police violence, rape, torture, murder and abductions are escalating horrifyingly in Myanmar; due to General Min Aung Hlaing's military dictatorship. A tragic testament of Myanmar's ongoing military repression and impunity, the military coup in 2021 has driven Myanmar into an abyss of tyranny, torture and torment - which endured almost 50 years of rule under oppressive military regimes - before the move towards democratic rule in 2011.
On 1 February 2021, President Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi were detained, along with ministers and members of Parliament, by General Min Aung Hlaing - who acted in blatant violation of International Law and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and his deputy army commanders are responsible of systematic violence and killings in Myanmar. Since the coup, more than 1,500 people have been killed, and at least 11,838 people have been arrested in military crackdowns, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners. Detainees have been subjected to torture and mistreatment, including beatings, gender-based violence and prolonged stress positions, according to research by Human Rights Watch.
The US, UK and Canada announced new, coordinated sanctions against Myanmar officials, including the attorney general, Thida Oo, the supreme court chief justice, Tun Tun Oo, and the anti-corruption commission chair, Tin Oo. The US said they were closely involved in the "politically motivated" prosecution of Aung San Suu Kyi. The ousted leader faces false and bogus charges from Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and his henchmen; and faces spending the rest of her life in prison.
Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and the Burmese military must immediately and unconditionally release all detainees, relinquish the power they have illegally seized and recognize the duly elected parliament from 2021 - so that rule of law, justice and democracy can be restored in Myanmar.
The International Community is advised to keep a safe distance from General Min Aung Hlaing and his henchmen, until these conditions have been met - and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) has been restored in Myanmar.
In the meantime domestic policy, foreign policy and human rights issues concerning the Republic of the Union of Myanmar will be handled by the NGO BTB-Global Peacebuilding.
