'A mysterious and enthralling historical novel of a powerful narrative.' Ricasso
In a time when England was governed by intrigue and 'lawful profit', who could anybody really trust?
A story of betrayal, revenge, conspiracy and murder, of love, corruption, and the mightiest ale in England.
A Hull scrivener seeking only to become an honourable townsman is drawn into the noise of conflict he cannot escape. It is a path which will lead to the faithless office of intelligencer, Captain of Spies, and his own kind of redemption.
Myhel Muddyman a brickmaker's son is one of the lucky ones, chosen to be schooled an honourable townsman he serves as Hull scrivener to the chamberlain. When Myhel witnesses a shipyard scrivener fall to his death from the town walls, he finds himself spurned by the ambitious chamberlain and disowned by the town he swore to serve. As storm clouds of civil-war gather Myhel is recruited agent by the scoutmaster in Hull to keep the town safe. Myhel infiltrates the underside of society smoldering with the fires of revolution, and rubs shoulders with the governing authority and leading nobility, only to find nothing is quite what it seems. The trail to discover the truth leads to a revenge conspiracy and a war fuelled with the 'mightiest ale in England'. To end the war Myhel must destroy the town that gave him benefit or become the man promised him and live without honour, either choice ends in betrayal and the Intelligencer begins..
The nature of man, unnatural war and treachery lead from provincial town to noise of the governing house of England.
The noise of man is an earth made silent
