The ship, forced to go around the Cape of Good Hope, the southern most tip of Africa, by the action of Egypt's Colonel Nasser closing the Suez Canal during the British-French and Egyptian War; the route to Singapore was the longest possible.
The story, set against a background of the closing days of the British Empire, continues with the fight against Communist Terrorists in the jungles of Malaya and then on to the turmoil of thwarting smugglers and pirates in the China Sea.
The story is fact. Mostly hilariously funny. Sometimes frightening. Always alive.
The author, Gordon Wilfred Triggs, was born in 1935 before the start of World War 2 in the working class district of the Sandfields, Swansea, in the county of what was then Glamorganshire, South Wales.
His father, working in an armaments factory, moved the family further out of town in the expectation of the German bombing raids to come. This decision nearly cost Gordon, his Mother and Sister their lives by a near miss of the Luftwaffe.
The young lad did well at school but without guidance started his working career as an engineering apprentice. There he gained a deferment until the age of 21 before he was obliged to do his two years compulsory National Service. He served a period of two years in the Royal Navy which were to shape his character and thinking from then on.
After his two years of National Service Gordon beganhis career in Industrial Management which was to take him on more distant and exotic travels. He did a number of ever increasingly senior jobs and then occupied roles of Managing Director of a Blue chip company and eventually Chairman of his own firm which was established to design, manufacture and sell very advanced sonar products to the Royal Navy for charting the sea bed and anything potentially unpleasant on it. During this period he married, had three sons and six grand children. Eventually Gordon decided to work for himself as a Business and Management Consultant, mainly helping small and medium sized companies to become profitable and grow.
In between these activities he completed his book Two Years Before the What ? Believing that there would be people who would find the story fascinating.
