The year is 1982. Many African nations are yet to fully deliver on the promises made and suggested by the exuberant euphoria that characterized the events leading up to independence. Disillusionment and division are made worse by the genuine problems emergent nations had to grapple with. Such include insecurity and corruption. Philemon Changilwa lives on the slopes of Mount Elgon and works for an agricultural research parastatal. Because he is a popular footballer with a local team he gets employment as a wildlife guard and gets to play for a national league side. On the local and national scene the populace anticipates general elections. The ruling elite allege seditious movements are rife in the country. The nation is on edge. There are detentions and arrests. The multiparty system is scraped. All these climax into an attempted coup. The ensuing events further grieve the wounds from which the nations are reeling, and puts into question the very viability of the nation-state and its fledgling democracy. All seems lost but hope endures the times. Innocence and idealism still speak from the past and present; and from a rich tradition of folk-lore relevant lessons can be learnt as Philemon's family tell and re-tell of a past in which there is already too much of the present.
