The notion that "it takes a village to raise a child" is highlighted within the narratives. The stories emphasise the importance of resilience and determination when faced with adversity such as the effects of poverty and racism. The author describes the relationships, emotional and cultural experiences, and whanau aroha (love) that impacts positively or negatively on a child's sense of belonging.

Autoren-Porträt von Marge Wong

Marge Wong is of Maori-Chinese heritage. Has a Masters degree in Teaching and Learning from the Christchurch College of Education. Is an experienced teacher and principal in the primary sector. Was a Senior Lecturer in a tertiary institution focusing on teacher education and professional development. Employed by a NZ government agency, to review the quality of education and care in New Zealand pre-schools and schools. Presented academic papers internationally, with a focus on teaching or working with Maori. In retirement, Marge plays golf and lawn bowls, sings in a choir, and carries out community service as a Justice of the Peace.
