Additionally if two sequences from different organisms are similar, they may have been a common ancestor sequence and sequences are defined as being homologous.Once the MSA has been found, the no. of types of changes in the aligned sequence residues may be used for a phylogenetic analysis.In some cases, the position is so important for function that mutational changes are not observed.
