Werner Schmalenbach, geboren 1920 in Göttingen, 1955 - 1962 Direktor der Kestner-Gesellschaft Hannover und 1962 - 1990 Direktor der Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. Initiator zahlreicher Ausstellungen zur internationalen Gegenwartskunst. Mitarbeit an der documenta II und III in Kassel sowie mehrmalige Tätigkeit als Kommissar an der Biennale Sao Paulo. Zahlreiche Publikationen zum Film, zur Kunst der Moderne sowie der Kunst Afrikas. Werner Schmalenbach verstarb im Jahr 2010.
