This book addresses the problem of finding ampacitiesof underground cables. Although standard methods forsolving this problem provide satisfactory results,however, these results are not always optimal andalgorithms are not always convergent. This booktakes these standard methods as a starting point andformulates the ampacity calculations as anoptimization problem. The solution to thisoptimization problem gives the required ampacities,and is determined by utilizing the barrier methodalgorithm. This algorithm is implemented inFORTRAN-77 and used to obtain ampacity solutions forvarious cable configurations. The results arecompared with ampacities obtained using standardmethods, implemented in the CYMCAP commercialsoftware package. The comparisons show that ampacitysolutions obtained with the optimization method areat least equal and up to 15% greater than thoseobtained with the latter. Such an increase in totalcurrent loadings greatly improves the utilizationefficiency of power cables.

Wael Moutassem received the B.A.Sc. (with honors) and M.A.Sc.degrees from the University of Toronto, ON, Canada, in 2005, inEngineering Science (Electrical Option), and in 2007, inElectrical Engineering, respectively. He is currently a ResearchAssistant in the Energy Systems Group at the University ofToronto, working towards the Ph.D. degree.
