Ghillie James half als Kind ihrer Mutter in der Küche des elterlichen Pubs in Kent. Später arbeitete sie fünf Jahre als Food Editor des Sainsbury's Magazine ; als freie Autorin schrieb sie für verschiedene Kochzeitschriften und ist heute Food Editor des neuen Tesco Magazine. Heute lebt sie in Hampshire und führt eine Firma namens "The Lazy Larder", die Suppen, Marmelade, Eintöpfe und Aufläufe für Feinkostgeschäfte und Privatkunden herstellt.
