The report presents a study on nitrogen and phosphorus pressures at the European scale. The objective of the research was the development and implementation of a modelling approach to estimate the actual nitrogen and phosphorus pressures on surface water quality at medium and large basin scale (European scale), using readily available data. In particular the study aimed to estimate: the contribution of different sources (point and diffuse) to the total nutrient load in rivers; the nutrients diffuse emissions into surface waters; and the nutrients retention in the land and river systems. The estimation of nutrient pressures was performed by means of the model GREEN, which was calibrated in seven large European river basins (part of the Danube, the Rhine and the Elbe, the Weser and Ems in Germany, the Seine and the Rhône in France and the Meuse, between France and Belgium). Finally the estimation was extrapolated at the European scale.
