William Somerset Maugham, geboren 1874 in Paris, ab dem Alter von 10 Jahren aufgewachsen bei seinem Onkel, einem Provinz-Geistlichen. Vagabundierender Student in Heidelberg mit Besuchen von philosophischen, historischen und literarischen Vorlesungen. Medizin-Studium bis zur Approbation am St. Thomas Hospital in London. Zahlreiche Reisen, u. a. in den Fernen Osten. Seine Erzählungen waren oft gewürzt mit geistreich-witziger, auch zynischer Lebenskritik. Literarische Vorbilder waren Guy de Maupassant und Anton Tschechow.
