Warhol is as important to the world of avant-garde film as he is to the world of art. There is no single book that addresses all of Warhols films (though there are several books that treat individual films). Murphy is a filmmaker himself, and his readings of the films are detailed, sometimes challenging, and occasionally idiosyncratic, much like the films themselves. Murphys close analysis of how they were created provides a revisionist view of Warhols methods. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that Warhol liked to set up the camera, let it run, and see what aspect of the dramas that surrounded him at the Factory got captured, Murphy is able to show that Warhol was a careful planner, deeply interested in details of lighting and framing. Murphy is also able to explore the various ways - some exploitive, some collegial - that Warhol directed his collaborators, maneuvering, cajoling, manipulating, and ordering people about until he got exactly the emotional responses that he wanted.
