In some domesticated dog and cats breeds, brachycephaly is a normal variation but in humans, it is a disorder that results from premature fusion of the coronal sutures or from external deformation. The incidence of brachycephaly has increased dramatically since the rise of sudden infant death syndrome recommendations for parents to keep their babies on their backs.
