Like tectonic plates, collective absolute presuppositions are obscured by linguistic conventions, cognitive patterns, and current social and cultural precedents. Yet, because they are a part of the way human beings structure reality, they determine how the principles of religious faith are received. Professors, pastors, preachers, teachers, religious educators, and others who have accepted the challenge to seek greater understanding of the religious traditions to which they are devoted, regularly deal with them. This book presents them as integral to practical theology, describes how to identify and describe them, and details their theological significance and history.

Pressezitat
"This book shows religious educators that where religious education ends has a great deal to do with the deep assumptions with which it begins. Sharon Peebles Burch helps us think well about Christian education by teaching us to think deeply. Don't miss this book." (Don S. Browning, University of Chicago)"This book is a tour de force. Not only does it make an important contribution to Tillich interpretation, but it simultaneously makes an important contribution to the contemporary discussion of practical theology. An important and badly needed book." (Richard R. Osmer, Princeton Theological Seminary)
"Sharon Peebles Burch's book is an original study in the church's collective absolute presuppositions that includes a commentary on the importance of the empirical approach in practical theology. It deserves worldwide reading and studying." (Johannes A. van der Ven, Nijmegen University, The Netherlands)
"Evocative and informing, Sharon Peebles Burch encourages theologians and church leaders to ask fundamental questions regarding their presuppositions. She brings a fresh perspective to practical theology by proposing an interpretive role in discerning and analyzing the presuppositions that operate in religious communities and in the academic disciplines of theology." (Mary Elizabeth Moore, Claremont School of Theology)
