Comparative Evaluation of the Diseases Associated with Sugarcane

Monitoring of the Bacterial and Fungal microorganisms associated with Saccharum officinarum (Sugarcane) in ethnobotanical garden of Wesley University, Ondo was carried out through different microbial processes. These involve collection of samples from sugarcane plants to isolate the bacterial and fungi disease associated with sugarcane and the development of disease inventory associated with sugarcane. Samples from the soil, stem, root and leaf were cultured on Nutrient agar, Potato dextrose agar and Plate count agar respectively and the isolates obtained were identified using cultural, morphological and biochemical characteristics. The bacteria isolates identified from the samples collected were Aeromonas sp., Bacillus sp., Corynebacerium sp., Pseudomonas sp., Micrococcus sp., Serratia sp., Staphylococcus sp., Enterococcus sp., while the fungal isolates identified were Penicillium sp., Aspergillus sp., Mucor sp., Rhizopus sp., Saccharomyces sp. During the period of this researchwork diseased leaf and stem sample where common throughout the study period and was at its peak during the rainy season.
