The major purpose of this delivery system is to increase the residence time between the formulation and the conjunctival tissue, for controlled release for treatment. The signify volume of tears in human eye below normal circumstances is about 7µl. Highest volume that can be supposed in the conjunctival sac cavity in non blinking situation is about 30µl. The volume administered by normal dropper for the duration of installation as drop is 50µl, so from this we draw a conclusion that more than 20µl of drop is lost as spoilage and some most the spoilage of drug is also take place by nasolachrymal drainage so there is maximum amount of spoilage of content take place. In recent few years lots of research work is going to overcome this problem like increase in viscosity etc, but this also not fulfils the desired problem. To overcome this bioavailability problem Opthalmic inserts fetches lots of attention to the researcher with the aim of enhancing the contact time, attaining controlled release, decrease in frequency of administration, recovering patient compliance and enhance therapeutic efficacy.
