This book first provides an historical overview of the critical reception of Charles Dickens' treatment and use of language, and then analyzes his rhetoric by focusing on one novel, Bleak House , as exemplary of his techniques. Both the written and spoken word are examined minutely to illustrate that, in some respects, Dickens incorporated rhetorical strategies into his work well before such theories would become mainstream.

Pressezitat
"Concentrating on the 'walls of words' metaphor in 'Bleak House', Sheila Foor...provides a very detailed and illuminating analysis of the impenetrable verbal rhetoric, both written and spoken, exhibited by the legal profession in the British Courts of Chancery during the nineteenth century." (Edward P.J. Corbett, The Ohio State University)"Ingenious in its insights, ingratiating in its style, (Dickens' Rhetoric) is a compelling contribution to Dickens studies." (Philip Stevick, Temple University)
"While much has been done with Dickens' focus on the written word in 'Bleak House', even on this subject, Foor's work breaks new ground...a valuable study." (John J. Fenstermaker, The Florida State University)
"Professor Foor traces Dickens' intricate use of language, exploring the great enchanter's sensitive deployment of verbal strategies, tones of voice, and 'silent rhetoric' by which he renders his wide range of human character and sympathy." (Frank P. Riga, Canisius College)
