Emigre magazine was a critically acclaimed design magazine published between 1984 and 2005. It is in the permanent design collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, the Design Museum in London, and the Denver Art Museum. The magazine was recently on exhibited at MoMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Founded by designer Rudy VanderLans and a group of friends, and coinciding with the birth of the Macintosh computer, Emigre magazine lived at the vanguard of computer generated design. Fueled by Emigre's succesful digital type foundry, the magazine became one of the most popular and controversial graphic design magazines published during the 1990s. 69 issues were published in a variety of formats, featuring in depth interviews with fellow design trailblazers and critical essays by an emerging group of young design writers. Emigre's experimental layouts challenged the mores of traditional magazine and typeface design. Designed and edited by VanderLans, Emigre, the book, is a selection of reprints, using original digital files, tracing Emigre's development from its early bitmap design days through to the final twice-yearly book-sized issues co-published with Princeton Architectural Press. In its heyday, Emigre magazine represented a fertile, idea-packed design culture that produced some of the most exciting contributions to 20th-century type design, typography, and design criticism. Emigre, the book, is a brilliant, superbly designed publication that distills the content of a magazine that led the world in the way of graphic design for two decades.
