English Counter Russian examines English/Russian literary translations of works by seven renowned authors and a critic - Pasternak, Chukovsky, Voinovich, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Hemingway, and Paustovsky. Focusing on translation criticism that exposes all linguistic features of the original, this book includes the most salient qualities of the original's style and spirit. In so doing, Professor Sendich establishes linguistic categories best suitable for detection of translation's infelicities and excellence. Such a linguistic approach has helped him draw compelling conclusions regarding the overall quality and ranking of the translations.

Pressezitat
"'English Counter Russian' by Munir Sendich is a delight for the scholar of Russian literature and an indispensable reference book for the translator from Russian. The former will find here evaluations of English renditions of important works of Russian prose informed by an intimate knowledge of both languages, linguistic rigor and literary sensibility, as well as by a balanced conception of what translation may practically achieve. The latter will find a thorough commentary along with a set of high but attainable parameters for orientation in the art of translation." (Savely Senderovich, Professor of Russian Literature and Medieval Studies, Cornell University)"Over the past two or three decades the field of translation studies has virtually skyrocketed in all languages in the world, and translation theory has undergone a worldwide process of convergence toward a clear understanding of what this high art is. Translation criticism, however, remains primitive. Over the past two or three decades Munir Sendich has worked quietly and effectively to develop his type of translation criticism. We should hope that this collection of essays will show not only linguists, but literary scholars and translators as well, the efficacy of his exhaustive analytical approach." (Lauren G. Leighton, Professor of Russian, Cornell University)
