On-site archaeological museums have a unique advantage that other museums lack. They have the ability to provide a first-hand interpretation of what archaeologists have found and how they found it, while at the same time demonstrating the importance of conserving both objects and excavation sites. The immediate challenges that on-site archaeological museums face are tourism, vandalism, financial stability, context and interpretation, and the conservation (maintenance) of the archaeological sites and their objects. By analyzing heavily trafficked Greek and Roman archaeological sites and their museums, recommendations will be made for improving their institutions, ultimately creating better visitor understanding. Through research and analysis of these sites, the museum profession will be provided with a practical model to incorporate in the future.
