Sagala dissects Mario Davidovsky''s 1995 work "Flashbacks" and examines it''s form, phraseology (including harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic elements), and development of referential ideas. Written from the vantage point of a composer, Sagala offers insight into Davidovsky''s idiosyncratic style. Beginning with identification of the work''s primary materials, the reader is progressively guided through the development of thematic ideas, and shown how the repercussions of local developments ultimately contribute to definition of the work''s overall form. Gesture and phrase shape play important roles in Flashbacks, and the methodology behind development of these ideas and the resultant narrative is examined in detail. This book also contains a chapter on how Davidovsky''s experience with electronic music has led him to an elevated sense of timbre''s role in defining the identity of musical idea music within a purely acoustic medium. Elements of gesture and orchestration found in Flashbacks are compared with the composer''s earlier electronic works.
