Up to date, there are known two common types of gene doping, the first somatic cell doping, also known as transfer of nucleic acid, and the second germline modification, in which changes are made to cells (e.g. reproductive cells and/or embryo), using normal or genetically modified cells. Along with its primary performance-enhancing effects, gene doping is often associated with a number of health risks, related to genetic and carcinogenic diseases.
