With the envisioned introduction of various multimedia services, there is much demand for high speed wireless data transmission. The wireless systems of today are being evolved to accommodate this need both in the cellular as well as the WLAN fronts. This book provides the reader with up-to-date information on the latest wireless communication system specifications where higher data rates are aimed. Tools that provide higher spectral efficiency in such systems are also discussed in detail. In this light, the North American and European 3G standards and their evolutions are discussed. Details of the 2004 release of the North American standard IS-856-A and the WCDMA Release V with HSDPA are given. Similarly, the GSM evolution path; GPRS, EGPRS, EDGE and GERAN are explained. The WLAN standards family, IEEE 802.11 can also be found in this book. In all these systems and their evolutions tools for higher spectral efficiencies are needed to achieve the high data rates. As such, multipleantenna, spatial processing, transmit diversity, advanced receiver techniques, joint equalization and space time decoding, improved synchronization techniques,cross-layer based adaptive resource allocation, efficient routing techniques all provide means for higher spectral efficieny. All of these techniques are discussed in this book. Evolution of the physical layer alone is not sufficient for higher data rates; it is also necessary to evolve the wireless networks. The evolution towards peer-to-peer communications and specifically the cellular ad-hoc augmented networks are also explained in this book.
