William Horwood wuchs in Oxford an der Themse auf, dem Fluss, der auch Kenneth Grahame zu 'Der Wind in den Weiden' inspiriert hat. Horwood studierte Wirtschaftswissenschaften und Geographie. In den 60er und frühen 70er Jahren war er als Journalist für verschiedene englische Zeitschriften tätig, von 1971-78 war er Ressortleiter der Daily Mail, bevor er sich als freischaffender Autor in seiner Geburtsstadt Oxford niederließ. Seine Romane haben sich in England allesamt zu Longsellern entwickelt.
