It is based on an empirical investigation and careful field-research in Maharashtra. Two villages are compared as to their differences in socio-economic, agricultural and socio-cultural development. The first, traditional village is on the threshold of change from rainfed subsistance to irrigated agriculture whereas the other has had intensive irrigation for several years already.
