This book describes empirical research undertakeninto intuitive interaction. This research issignificant because it impacts on everyday use ofeveryday devices by everyday people, and has thepotential to affect the ways in which products aredesigned and, more importantly, the ways in whichthey are understood by their users. Intuitiveinteraction involves the use of knowledge gainedfrom other products and/or experiences. It is fastand generally non-conscious. Experimental studiesrevealed that prior exposure to products employingsimilar features helped participants to complete settasks more quickly and intuitively, and thatfamiliar features were intuitively used more oftenthan unfamiliar ones. Three principles of intuitiveinteraction have been developed. A conceptual toolhas also been devised to guide designers in theirplanning for intuitive interaction. Ongoing workinvolves further refining this tool andinvestigating intuitive interaction for older people.
