A kiss is the touching of one's lips to another person or object, used to express love, passion, affection, respect, greeting, and good luck. The word comes from Old English cyssan "to kiss", in turn from coss "a kiss". It is considered "an act expressive of endearment," as something "most natural." Sir Richard Steele writes, "Tis certain, Nature was its author and it began with the first courtship." From its beginning, the act of kissing has become a nearly universal and natural expression of affection among people. Until modern times, however, kissing was unknown to certain races, such as aborigines, Tahitians, and many tribes in Africa.N Kissing has also been used throughout history in numerous rites and ceremonies. It was a common mode of salutation and is described in the "Sacred Writings," as when men saluted the sun, moon, or stars, and evidence of these superstitions is found in most countries. The ancient Greeks kissed the lips, hands, or feet as an act of respect, evidenced by the writings of Homer.
