Language contact and displays of social identity

In institutional settings, the constitution of social identity is manifested in the speakers' discourses as a product of many functional and social parameters. In an international business environment, speakers may employ language mixes for functional-communicative reasons but also as a stylistic device. The present study examines the ways the employees working in the local German headquarter of an international corporation use English language mixes when displaying and negotiating their social identities. The speakers operate in the context of the global structure of their organizational unit and the organizational specifics of the local German department they are deployed to.Wenn Sprecher in Institutionen und Unternehmen ihre soziale Identität darstellen und aushandeln, manifestiert sich dies im Diskurs der Akteure als ein Produkt zahlreicher sozialer und funktionaler Parameter. In der Kommunikation der Mitarbeiter von Ländergesellschaften internationaler Organisationen stehen den Sprechern als weiteres Stil- und Symbolisierungsmittel Wechsel in die jeweilige offizielle Unternehmenssprache zur Verfügung. In einem funktional-pragmatischen Ansatz untersucht die Arbeit, inwieweit die Mitarbeiter eines internationalen Konzerns englische Sprachwechsel in der interaktiven Konstitution sozialer Identität in Arbeitsbesprechungen verwenden, und diskutiert die kommunikativ-funktionalen und ideologischen Aspekte der verwendeten Sprachwechsel in den erhobenen Gesprächsdaten.
