Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela, geboren 1918 in Südafrika, ist weltbekannt für seinen Kampf gegen die Apartheid, für den er 27 Jahre im Gefängnis verbringen mußte. 1993 erhielt er den Friedensnobelpreis, ein Jahr später wurde er zum Präsidenten von Südafrika ernannt. Mandela wuchs in dem ländlichen Dorf Qunu auf, wo er schon früh durch die Erzählungen der Älteren mit der afrikanischen Geschichte und Folklore vertraut gemacht wurde. Er verstarb im Dezember 2013 im Alter von 95 Jahren.
