Nagib Machfus, geb. am 11.12.1911 als Sohn einer Kleinbürgerfamilie in Kairo, entschied sich schon bald nach dem Studium für das Schreiben. Er hat alle Elemente der volkstümlichen Erzählkunst in seine Werke aufgenommen und ist der eigentliche 'Vater des ägyptischen Romans'. Sein Lebenswerk, das an die vierzig Romane, Kurzgeschichten und Novellen umfasst, gehört längst zur Weltliteratur. 1988 wurde ihm als einem der bedeutendsten arabischen Autoren der Gegenwart der Nobelpreis für Literatur verliehen. Er starb 2006.
