This work is the analysis of the perceptions and meanings attributed by the nurses working in the prison units and characterizes these prison units belonging to the Penitentiary Coordination of the West Region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The descriptive method with a qualitative approach in 19 prison units, 35 nurses, was applied to the semi-structured interview, organized and analyzed through the Collective Subsetting Discourse (DCS) technique, based on the ethical and bioethical theoretical framework. From the analysis of the data emerged two themes, Challenges of the work of the nurse in the Units of the Prison and Meaning of the work. CONCLUSIONS: The daily ethical dilemmas experienced by nurses were evidenced and it is necessary that the inspection bodies of the profession, class entities, human rights associations, civil society and the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration mobilize in favor of an ethical and safe professional practice.
