Scientists have discovered new genetic clues to the cause of short-sightedness! This new scientific discovery has allowed experts to develop new treatments for myopia. Basically, scientific researchers have found 24 new genes that urge myopia to occur. The genes are located within the human brain, via the eye tissue signalling, in the eye structure and eye development. One of the functions of the genes is that they are involved in retinoic acid metabolism, which is found in the retina. Other genes play a role in the extracellular structure of the eye. Nonetheless, the genes discovered in the study only account for 3.4% of the variation in myopia, meaning there are still a huge number of unexplored factors - genetic and environmental - that contribute to the development of the condition.
