The phenomenon of emerging market economies havegained much attention from the global economyperspective in recent years. Although economic growthand various reforms restructure these markets, somecommon characteristics differentiate them fromstabilised 'market economies'.This study examines the operational environment ofWestern companies in Russia, focused on distribution,supply management, organisation structures, humanresource management and forms of entry. Since thegeneral business environment has a great influence onthe business behaviour of companies, economicfactors, market and institutions, legal-political andtechnical conditions are also observed. Moreover, thesituation on the Russian market is compared withconditions in other emerging markets.The general objective of this study is to identifyobstacles faced by Western companies operating on theRussian market and to observe which strategiescompanies tend to choose in order to cope withcertain difficulties.

The author was born in Belarus, but lives in Germany since 1993.She studied "Baltic Management Studies" at the Universtity ofApplied Sciences Stralsund in Germany. Extensive stays abroadwere: Russia, Great Britain, Switzerland, Australia.
