Klappentext zu „Pathobiochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Metabolic Syndrome “
The concept of pathogenesis of the Metabolic Syndrome, a constellation of disease states and conditions including insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus type 2, obesity, dysregulation of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, vascular dysfunction, hypertension, and accelerated atherogenesis is becoming increasingly important not only for physicians but also for other life science disciplines. This book will be a "pathobiochemist's view" on the Metabolic Syndrome based on a series of lectures for chemists, food chemists, biochemists, biotechnologists, and biologists. A short clinical background and a condensed overview about biochemical pathways are given, closely related to various facets of the Metabolic Syndrome in context. Specific emphasis has been placed on intracellular signaling cascades associated with insulin resistance, adipose tissue inflammation and hypoxia, non-alcoholic liver inflammation, disturbed lipid homeostasis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and endothelial dysfunction. The putative association with cancerogenesis and new findings on the genetics of the Metabolic Syndrome are discussed and the development of dedicated animal models are included.

Autoren-Porträt
Jens Pietzsch received both his PhD/MD degree in pathological biochemistry and internal medicine, and his postdoctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) in pathological biochemistry and clinical metabolic research from the University of Technology Dresden (TUD). He is awarded an expert biochemist for toxicology from the University of Leipzig. For many years he was the head of the lipoprotein laboratory at the Institute of Clinical Metabolic Research at Carl Gustav Carus Medical School (TUD). Currently he is the head of the Department of Radiopharmaceutical Biology at the Institute of Radiopharmacy, Research Center Dresden-Rossendorf (Member of the Leibniz Association), Germany. Jens Pietzsch is senior lecturer (assistant professor) at the TUD. His research interests focus on pathological biochemistry in atherogenesis, inflammation, tumorigenesis, and metastasis. His specific expertise covers pathological biochemistry of prediabetic states. His specific methodological expertise covers radiopharmacology and multimodal molecular imaging, particularly, small animal positron emission tomography.l medicine, and his postdoctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) in pathological biochemistry and clinical metabolic research from the University of Technology Dresden (TUD).
