For the future use of hydrogen as an automotive fuel, its on-board storage is a crucial factor. One approach is the storage of liquid hydrogen at 20 K in double-walled, vacuum insulated tanks. The introduction of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) enables a high potential to reduce the weight compared to the state-of-the-art steel tanks. However, the high permeability of hydrogen through plastics can lead to a long-term degradation of the insulating vacuum. In this book, different permeation barriers are thoroughly investigated and evaluated. An appropriate solution is presented and verified on an 170 liter CFRP liquid hydrogen tank.
