The Initia doctrinae physicae has long been a widely distributed textbook in protestant countries, which was printed at least twenty-two times from 1549 to 1600 with minor amendments and was edited in the Corpus Reformatorum, but was not translated until now, so that it experienced no more reception in more recent times. This volume provides a translation based on a privately owned copy of the first edition of 1549, which conveys the general sense and clings to the style of the original text and will enable historians of the natural sciences and of theology and other interested persons to take note of this important work by Melanchthon and make use of it for their research purposes. The original publication is dedicated to the mayor of Nordhausen, Michael Meienburg
